Introducing ODOC at Venkateshwara School

On 6th June 2025, the One Dollar One Child (ODOC) team visited Venkateshwara School in Ambattur, Chennai, to introduce the ODOC Project—an initiative focused on combating child malnutrition through Spirulina supplementation.

Meeting with the School Principal: The ODOC Project

Positive Engagement with Ms. Uma Kanan

The team had a constructive discussion with the school’s Principal, Ms. Uma Kanan. The ODOC team provided a comprehensive overview of the project, outlining its goals, methodology, and the numerous health benefits of Spirulina for children suffering from malnutrition.

Ms. Uma Kanan responded positively, appreciating the program’s potential to improve the health and well-being of students, especially those who may be nutritionally at risk. She acknowledged the value of preventive nutritional interventions in a school setting.

Requirement for Parental Consent

While expressing support for the initiative, Ms. Uma Kanan emphasized the importance of parental approval before implementing any health-related programs. As a step forward, she proposed that the ODOC team provide informational brochures which can be shared with parents through the school’s official parent group.

This approach will ensure transparency and allow families to fully understand the purpose and safety of Spirulina supplementation before giving their consent.

Next Steps in ODOC Project Implementation

The ODOC team will prepare and deliver these brochures to the school promptly. Once the materials are distributed and parental consents are collected, the school management will review the feedback and proceed with evaluating the proposal for approval.

This process highlights a collaborative, student-first approach, ensuring all stakeholders are involved in supporting child health through informed decision-making.

Conclusion: Building Partnerships for Better Nutrition

The engagement with Venkateshwara School marks an important step in ODOC’s expanding footprint in Chennai’s educational institutions. With proactive leadership and clear communication channels in place, the project is well-positioned to take root once parental support is secured.

The ODOC team remains optimistic and committed to working closely with the school to bring the life-changing benefits of Spirulina to its students—one child, one school, one community at a time.
