Date: July 5, 2025
On July 5th, 2025, participants of the Sunya Red Belt Meditation Program experienced a shift in perspective as Dr. Rajesh Savera explored the deeper purpose and ancient origins of one of the program’s core practices—reverse counting from 99 to 0.
Far from being a simple cognitive exercise, reverse counting was revealed as a time-tested upāya (a Sanskrit term meaning “skillful means”) that has been practiced for over 2,500 years. Rooted in early Buddhist and yogic traditions, this method is designed to anchor the mind in the present and initiate a state of focused awareness.
Reverse Counting as a Path to Awareness
Dr. Savera emphasized that in a world dominated by external noise and distraction, techniques like ganana (counting) offer a direct route to focus and clarity. He explained:
“We don’t escape the world — we learn to be in it, undisturbed. We interact through the body, feelings, mind, and awareness — this is our basic foundation. Awareness begins when we observe these layers without getting caught in them.”
Counting from 99 to 0, when practiced repeatedly, becomes a rhythm that slows mental chatter, allowing the practitioner to settle into the present moment with precision and calm.
Red Belt: The Foundation of Self-Mastery
Dr. Savera reiterated that the Red Belt level is not just a training stage, but a platform for mental discipline and grounded presence. He reminded participants:
- The mind often clings to what no longer exists, creating unnecessary suffering.
- Letting go is a vital skill in the Kaliyuga—the present age—marked by rapid change and distraction.
Releasing outdated identities, past stories, and imagined futures helps individuals return to what is real and relevant now.
Sattipathāna Sutra and the Four Foundations
Referencing the Sattipathāna Sutra, Dr. Savera linked reverse counting with the four foundations of mindfulness:
- Body (Kāyānupassanā)
- Feelings (Vedanānupassanā)
- Mind (Cittānupassanā)
- Consciousness (Dhammānupassanā)
He explained that structured counting is a simple yet effective technique to connect with these dimensions, helping individuals become more present and observant—without judgment.
The session on Sunya Red Belt Meditation Program concluded with a timely message: as external technologies grow rapidly, internal methods of attention and regulation must also be cultivated. Through techniques like reverse counting, individuals can remain composed, clear, and intentional in their daily lives.
With just one day remaining in the Red Belt program, participants expressed a deeper understanding of Sunya’s practical principles and a readiness to apply them consistently.
