Studying AGAMAS — Ekotara Agama — 27 April 2025

1 Min Read

In this session of the Ekotara Agama study, we explored the teaching from EA 18.1, where the Buddha, while staying at Anaathapindidas Ashrama in Jetavana of Shraavastii, spoke about two wonderful principles that uphold and protect the world: shame (hri) and remorse (apatrapya). Without these, the Buddha explained, society would lose the natural respect and care among family, friends, and communities, becoming no different from animals.

Datuk Dr. Lim Siow Jin beautifully emphasized the crucial role these two qualities play in maintaining human dignity and social harmony.
Dr. Rajesh Savera guided the discussion, helping participants reflect on how developing shame and remorse strengthens right conduct and mutual respect.
The session inspired deep contemplation on the importance of nurturing these two guardians in daily life.
Together, the discussion reinforced the timeless relevance of the Buddha’s insight for the modern world.
