Chapter 16: The Fire Extinguished

In this insightful session, Datuk Dr. Lim Siow Jin shared reflections on the meaningful use of similes in early teachings, while Dr. Rajesh Savera guided the discussion with clarity and depth. The focus was on EA 16.3, where the Buddha, staying at Anāthapiṇḍika’s Ashrama in Jetavana, Śrāvastī, shared a profound message using the imagery of a crow and a pig.

The Buddha encouraged the bhikshus to reflect carefully, stating, “Now I shall give a simile of the crow, and I shall also give a simile of the pig.” These analogies pointed to patterns of behaviour and mindset that lead to either clarity or continued suffering. Participants explored how such simple, yet powerful comparisons carry lessons relevant to everyday choices and conduct.

The session offered a clear pathway for reflecting on behaviour and its consequences, connecting early texts to practical understanding without losing their original essence.
